A fusion of art and culture

The new art space ‘Yuan Link’ in the recently restored historical and cultural district of Zhang Yuan creates a unique experience by integrating tradition and the present, reality and virtual, east and west.

The space features renowned artists, designers and photographers from around the world, including David Hockney, Yinka Shonibare, Julian Opie, Liu Heung Shing and more.

Historically known as the “Best Garden in Shanghai”, Zhang Yuan has been revitalised into a unique cultural and commercial landmark in the heart of the city. This distinctive Shanghai cultural spirit is perfectly expressed in the ‘Yuan Link’ space, which blends contemporary art and design within a historical context. The space is housed in a century-old architectural building that once served as a gathering spot for socialites. Built in the late 1870s by a British merchant, Zhang Yuan has seen Shanghai's transformation from a treaty port to a modern metropolis. It was a popular venue for public speeches and social gatherings, reflecting the city's vibrant cultural life. In the early 1900s, it even featured amusement rides, including a roller coaster, making it a popular leisure spot for locals. The building's architecture, with its blend of Western and Chinese elements, stands as a testament to the cultural exchanges that have shaped Shanghai.

Along with other contributors such as Dior and Louis Vuitton, the showcased USM pieces offer a platform and a frame, creating stories with artworks and paintings. The exhibition features portraits of influential figures from all areas and throughout history, like Goethe, Einstein and The Beatles.

In the future, ‘Yuan Link’ will continue to host various activities, including exhibitions, exclusive events, brand releases and creative workshops, continuing to provide new experiences and possibilities while maintaining the vitality of this space.
