A journey back in time

Paris, France

More than 500 years apart! That is what separates the design of the USM Haller system from the construction of this astonishing 15th century Parisian house, located near the Pantheon and now listed as an Historic Monument.

In this architectural setting, rich with historical significance, several items of USM furniture have found their rightful home.

Although we cannot know everything about the various lives this house has had throughout its long history, photos of Paris taken by Eugène Atget at the end of the 19th century show it was fitted out for the wine trade at that time. Unfortunately, when the new owners, a couple of architects, acquired it twenty years ago, squatters had moved in, leaving it in a sorry state of repair. It was only after some major building work, including the restoration and redecoration of the magnificent floating spiral staircase and the installation of a lift in an old service shaft, that they would finally be able to move in.

Each of the four floors is just 30m² and dedicated to a single living area. Entering on the ground floor, we immediately come upon two anthracite USM Haller units framing an imposing medieval stone fireplace in the kitchen and dining area. They are fitted with additional marble tops which echo the large kitchen island opposite, creating an unusual but effective mix of styles and providing the room its character. Next to the fireplace is another room, featuring an anthracite USM Haller cabinet, fitted with a solid wood top.

A trace from the former architectural firm offices is found in the narrow entrance passage: a tall two-tone cabinet which serves as a bar and storage unit.

On the first floor, in the living room, the combination of USM pieces with other furniture, mixing contemporary and historical, lends a unique character to the space. The side tables may be old pedestals, but they find a natural home in front of the beams and stone walls dating back centuries.

The workspace on the second floor reflects the owners’ busy lives and signifies the start of their relationship with USM furniture.

Whether at the entrance to the bedroom on the third floor or in the lounge area converted from a cellar, USM pieces have found their place everywhere in this astonishing house. This clearly demonstrates both the versatility of this furniture between home and work and the incredible capacity of the USM Haller system to fit in well with any architectural style.
