The home office as we know it today, with data connections to the employer, originated in the early 1970s.

At the time, a technology was developed that connected satellite offices to mainframes via terminals, with telephone lines acting as network bridges. The term "telecommuting" was coined by Jack Nilles in 1973.

USM has been a believer in this new form of working since 1976, when it presented USM Haller as a solution for all spaces in private homes, an area where the workstation had its fixed role.
