An architect, an engineer and a vision

A furniture system inspired by architecture – balls, steel tubes, colourful metal panels. Clear forms, new aesthetics and highest functionality. A concept that began almost 60 years ago continues to inspire today. USM Haller has achieved cult status as the epitome of timeless design; it opens up possibilities, excites creative minds - and enhances any environment.

Modern Art Münsingen

USM Haller is part of the MoMA in New York and was recognised as a work of applied art since 1988. Above all, USM Haller is a feature in offices, chambers, agencies, living areas and shops around the globe. It was created in Münsingen near Bern, Switzerland.

Two visionaires, one idea

After completing his engineer studies, Paul Schärer Jr. joined the family business in 1961. The engineer had big ideas: he wanted to build a modern, industrial factory – a first creative act. He partnered with Fritz Haller, a respected architect of Solothurn school. Haller developed a flexible construction system using steel modules in varying sizes. The factory opened in 1965.

Born from architecture

Paul Schärer was fascinated with Haller's modular concept and had a bigger vision: interior design that complements architecture. Together, they developed a piece of furniture, miniature architecture – ingenious, just as modular and at the same time extraordinarily new. Predestined for further development.

Furniture with a system

The centrepiece of the system is a chrome-plated ball with six threaded holes. It connects the chrome-plated steel tubes; an unexpected and surprising shape for rectangular furniture. Added to this are sheet steel panels, powder-coated in various colours and freely combinable. Parts of the system were patented in 1965.

From prototype to USM Haller

Initially designed to be used in the company’s own offices, the aesthetic and forward-thinking furniture system was hailed in architecture journals as an international sensation. A commission came from the Rothschild bank in Paris to fit out an office building with 600 workstations – the company's first major project. Series production began in 1969.

Less is more

The system's clear lines and simple beauty offer endless possibilities. USM Haller can be configured at will and adjusted to tastes and changing requirements. It can also be extended in all directions. Its minimal design is eye-catching, inspiring the creativity of everyone who values design, quality and functionality. And that's not all: USM Haller complements every environment.

Clear-cut and flexible

In a fast-paced world, USM Haller is developing, integrating innovation while staying true to its iconic aesthetic. With light and energy embedded in the structure, USM Haller E is completely wireless, a revolutionary step into a new era. USM Haller lock C is an electromechanical locking system operated via app. Things are progressing: together with designers and futurologists who have embraced the DNA of USM Haller.

Greenguard and Cradle-to-Cradle®

The system is sustainable by nature. USM furniture is extremely long-lasting and handed down from generation to generation. Steel is a highly recyclable material and the coating does not contain any solvents or heavy metals. In 2008, USM was awarded Greenguard environmental certification and received the environmental label Cradle-to-Cradle® in 2018. The vision is to become a fully circular company by 2030.

From Münsingen out into the world

Alexander Schärer has headed up this fourth-generation family business since 2000. Production is still carried out at the headquarters in Münsingen. USM employs 450 people at the Swiss headquarters and subsidiaries in the USA, France, Germany, UK, Japan and China. The furniture systems are distributed by 430 dealers in around 40 countries.

USM Haller continues to evolve, while remaining true to itself by retaining original characteristics and invites users to challenge their own creativity.
